本片根据罗威尔·坎宁汉的连环画改编，故事发生在未来时代，由于宇宙战乱不断，大批外星人纷纷到地球避难。这里所说的黑衣人专门对付外星人的特殊警察，他们的职责就是监视在地球上生活的外星人以及外星人对地球有什么举动。这次，他们发现的是邪恶的外星人对地球采取的秘密入侵和破坏的计划。于是，他们决心与外星人做拼死一战。战斗打响后才发现，敌人是破坏力极强的虫类怪兽。
在星际电影已流行于泛滥之际，本片却出人意料地给人新鲜有趣的感觉，娱乐效果甚高。最成功的地方，是在于它虽然改编自漫画书，但编导在恰当地营造出一种夸张风格之余并没有把观众当白痴，反而煞费苦心地说服观众：本片呈现的那个光怪陆离的外星人世界有可能是真的，只不过一般人不愿意相信罢了。为了让故事的发展符合逻辑，编导把观众带入了威尔·史密斯饰演的杰的观点，随着他的历险，来认识在地球上有一个数十年来受到美国神秘机构监管的“外星人移民世界"。汤米·里·琼斯饰演的凯则负责解开谜底。剧情的发展在自圆其说之余还有峰回路转之妙，颇不同于其他同类科幻片的模式化的故事处理；另一个高明之处是导演巴里·索南菲尔德并没有把外星人的特技作为全部的卖点，反而着重传统的人物性格对比和幽默感十足的对白与场景处理。
