1915年，第一次世界大战中，加利普里战役是盟军惨败的一场战役，却有无数澳洲人参予和牺牲。导演藉这场战役写一个少年梦，阿奇里是一个理想主义者，他本来是运动场的跑手，为了伸张正义参战，便把体育精神也带到战场上。他拒绝在战场上充当微不足道的跑腿，宁愿跳出战壕与敌军交锋，明知上级颁下荒谬的命令，仍然忠心耿耿地执行。他的好友法兰是一个浪子，喜欢在运动场上作弊，来到军营也是玩世不恭，等到他真正沾染战争的气氛，也逐渐收起轻佻态度。电影从澳洲西部的牧场开始，发展到开罗的训练军营，最后在土耳其的战场结束。战场上的军官求胜心切，明知下属被敌军的机关枪瞄准，仍然迫令他们冲锋陷阵，结果一败涂地。两个年青人一心为社会服务，结果一个要赔上性命换取经验，留下好友在旁边狂号，惊见理想幻灭。
