提姆（杰夫丹尼尔饰演）虽然是个很有企图心的电视新闻记者，可是他却得不到老板的赏识，连好不容易得来的表现机会，都无缘无故的被搞砸，不仅公司最美丽的主播（伊莉莎白赫蕾饰）对他十分感冒，老板决定叫他回家吃自己。
就在回家的路上，突然的一阵闪光与爆破，倒楣的提姆以为自己遇上了车祸，没想到下车一看，竟然是火星人的太空船撞上地球！转化地球人外观的火星人马汀，为了修复太空船，只好找上提姆，新闻感十足的提姆发觉这可是千禧年最大的新闻，一旦得到这个独家，代表新闻从业人员最高荣誉的普立兹奖也可能有望，表面上是要协助马汀，但私下开始纪录火星人马汀的一举一动，准备公诸于世。
没料到，提姆与马汀相处越久，越发觉它其实是个善良的外星人，它喜欢吃冰淇淋；连它那会说话的衣服，都喜欢地球人的洗衣机，觉得泡在里面很舒服。但是正因为马汀的行为怪异，不知不觉就被太空研究中心小组成员盯上了，而提姆那群为抢新闻不遗余力的旧同事们，也开始发觉不对劲，一边要假装帮马汀修太空船，另一边要应付同事们的追问，此外他的内心又很挣扎，究竟马汀是否可以顺利的回到火星，还是最后因不忍冰淇淋的美味而留在地球呢？
本片改编自美国最受欢迎的同名电视影集；运用大量的电影特效，连外星人的衣服都是会说话有生命的个体，超炫的科技让整部电影十分有看头。
