　　在布莱恩·麦卡费提的童年记忆中，身为消防员的父亲丧生于火场的画面一直挥之不去。长大后的布莱恩追随了父亲和兄长史蒂夫的足迹，也成为消防员，在烈焰中打拼。不过作为菜鸟，布莱恩同史蒂夫矛盾重重，布莱恩努力让自己表现出色，以博取史蒂夫和同事们的认同。
　　芝加哥突发连环纵火案，不断有人在现场丧命，布莱恩开始展开暗中调查，发现自己已经超越了消防员的职责，要将凶手绳之以法……

这部表现灭火场景的惊险动作片，演员阵容强大，是一部富有写实、写情并赞颂英雄主义的大制作，感染力甚强，由真正的消防队员编剧。但故事编得并不出色，影片的精华是火场的特效，极度逼真。

·参加影片拍摄的临时演员有一些是真正的芝加哥消防员。
·罗伯特·德尼罗扮演的角色原型是一位真正的纵火案调查员。
·纵火案遇害者的姓氏Cosgrove源于为罗伯特·德尼罗担当技术顾问的芝加哥消防员兼作家William Cosgrove，而另一位遇害者的姓氏Seagrave则源于灭火器材制造商的名字。
·片中出现的消防队编号在现今的芝加哥消防署已经取消。
·影片剧组为了拍摄需要一共翻新了6辆消防车，在拍摄结束后将其中5辆捐赠给芝加哥消防署，4辆用于一线灭火，1辆备用。
