马丁·斯科塞斯导演。14年前，律师萨姆出于对被告行为的愤恨，故意隐瞒了有利于迈克尔的证据。目不识丁的迈克尔对此毫无察觉，他因强 . . 奸罪被判入监14年。在狱中，迈克尔开始自学法律，并发现了萨姆对他的背叛，于是决心报复。出狱后，他开始了一系列的进攻，意欲破坏萨姆的家庭和事业。而此时萨姆对此毫无察觉，他的妻女也险遭受害……
因强 . . 奸罪入狱十四年的卡迪刑满释放了。十四年前，律师萨姆出于道义隐藏了对卡迪有利的一份证据，致使卡迪被施以重刑。经过狱中十四年的磨练后，卡迪来到萨姆居住的小城，开始了他疯狂的复仇行动。
卡迪首先出现在萨姆一家的周围，造成他们心灵上的恐慌。而后他诱引并殴打了萨姆的情妇，又开始接近萨姆的女儿丹妮。恐惧的萨姆雇佣了打手袭击卡迪，却被凶猛的卡迪打得落花流水。一天深夜，卡迪潜入萨姆的住所，残忍地杀死了萨姆家的保镖和厨娘。
已成惊弓之鸟的萨姆带着妻子、女儿仓皇逃跑。卡迪也一直尾随他们追逐到一个叫“恐怖角”的地方。在狂风暴雨的晚上，卡迪爬上了萨姆一家藏身的游船。一场殊死搏斗过后，恐怖的卡迪最终与游船一起被汹涌的河水所吞灭。经历过这次磨难，萨姆一家紧紧地拥抱在一起。
