　　地理学家乔什·凯斯博士(阿伦·艾克哈特饰)无意中发现了一场可能会导致全球人类灭亡的大灾难，从而拉开了这部影片的序幕。
　　凯斯发现，地心温度因某种不明原因发生了改变，同时，这种未知的力量正在阻碍地球的正常运转。随着地球磁场的迅速恶化，一场毁灭性的灾难将紧随其后。为了拯救地球，保卫全人类的安危，凯斯将全球最杰出的科学家组织起来，成立了一支救援小组，他们计划乘坐地下飞船抵达地心，在那里引爆一个特殊装置，一旦成功，地球仍将像往常一样正常运转。地下飞船的驾驶员瑞贝卡(希拉里·斯旺克饰)，上校罗伯特·艾沃森(布鲁斯·格林伍德饰)率领一支科学精英部队踏上了这场生死之旅。

　　这是导演庄·阿米尔首次涉足科幻题材的影片，这位来自英国、毕业于剑桥的导演1990年开始进入好莱坞，这十几年间他的作品不算多，但却是风格各异，这其中有讲述南北战争的剧情片《萨莫斯比》，有惊悚片">惊悚题材的《叠影谋杀案》，还有国内观众熟悉的动作片《偷天陷阱》。
　　奥斯卡影后希拉里·斯旺克毫无疑问是整部影片最引人注目的亮点。自1999年凭借《男孩不哭》中的同性恋角色爆冷捧走小金人后，希拉里便开始了马不停蹄的接片工作，先是灵异惊悚片">惊悚片《天赋》中饱受虐 待的妻子，而后是《项链事件》里18世纪的法国宫廷美人，接着她又和两位演技派大高手艾尔·帕西诺、罗宾·威廉斯一起经历阿拉斯加的白夜(《失眠症》)，现在她又要钻到地心里去经历平生最刺激的冒险了。
　　以地球灾难为题材的影片早已泛滥成灾，1998年的时候是小行星，现在轮到了地核，在这样一部以展现特技和灾难场面为主的影片里，即使贵为奥斯卡影后的希拉里·斯旺克又能有什么惊人表现呢？《地心》从开拍之初，就被人们拿来和迈克尔·贝的《世界末*》相提并论，对此，导演阿米尔说：“在拍摄的时候我们特别注意这点，甚至建立了一套所谓的‘反迈克尔·贝《世界末*》’表演体系。”以力争不让观众看到前20分钟时就打着哈欠说，好一部无聊的《世界末*》地心版。
本片在好莱坞电影的投资规模中属于中等，所以在片中我们看到的火暴场面并不多，但是都给人留下了深刻印象，比如金门大桥骤然断成两截，数百人坠入大海；古罗马竞技场被密集的闪电激成碎片；伦敦广场的成群鸽子突然失控引发汽车爆炸，人群狂奔，地面开裂等场景。导演强艾米在国内观众中最有影响力和口碑的电影作品是99年在中国上映的由老牌明星肖恩康纳利和今年奥斯卡最佳女配角获得者凯瑟琳泽塔琼斯主演的《偷天陷阱》。
