当15岁的吉米·霍金斯无意中被一张地图绊倒，银河系间一场争夺宝藏的追逐开始了。这是一张记录了海盗藏匿那些搜刮来的财宝的地图。影片随着吉米乘着一艘巨大的太空帆船在浩瀚的宇宙中航行，踏上他的冒险旅程而开始。
　 船上那个很神奇的半机械人厨师约翰·斯立夫对吉米非常友好，在他的指导下吉米学会了不少东西，还在与异星生命的战斗中、黑洞的危险中以及可怕的太空风暴中显露出作为一名优秀太空人的潜质。
　 但是前方有什么样的危险在等着他都比不上发现自己最信任的好朋友--约翰--竟然是个彻头彻尾的大坏蛋，一个诡计多端的海盗，随时打算造反。面对背叛，吉米心灵上受到很大伤害，也让他从一个小男孩长成了大人。现在的他有足够的勇气和力量对抗叛徒，去发现那笔财宝，那笔远远超出他的想象的巨大财富。
